More than R1,7 million investment in grassroots football development

The Bayview U16 Youth Cup brings down the curtain on Youth Month, highlighting the significant role grassroots football continues to play in developing young talent across Cape Town. The event forms part of the City’s investment in grassroots football in the 2025/26 financial year.
The Bayview U16 Youth Cup is one of several grassroots football events supported by the City through the Special Events Committee.
Taking place at the Strandfontein Sports Complex from Sunday, 28 June until Friday, 3 July 2026, the tournament features more than 70 local and national teams, as well as a visiting team from Namibia.
The tournament forms part of the City’s continued investment in grassroots football development through strategic support for community tournaments and youth football festivals across the metro.
During the 2025/26 financial year, the City invested more than R1,7 million in grassroots football events and tournaments, benefiting thousands of young players.
‘Grassroots football plays a critical role in developing future sporting stars while also providing young people with positive opportunities to participate in healthy, structured activities. We are proud to support tournaments and festivals that not only nurture talent, but also bring communities together.
‘The City remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to talent identification, youth development, and the continued growth of football at grassroots level across Cape Town,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In addition to the provision of sports facilities and event infrastructure, the City’s support also included event services, trophies, medals, and lanyards.

- Strandfontein AFC Tournament by the Sea
- Stanturf Tournament of Dreams
- Trinitarians U14 Easter Tournament
Collectively, the grassroots football tournaments hosted more than 16 000 young players, creating opportunities for them to develop their skills, showcase their talent and build lifelong connections through sport.
